In January of this year, my brother (Emiel) organized an Old School Magic tournament called The Edge-Men Championship and invited us to participate. We were initially skeptical, but after much persuasion, Rudy and Clint agreed to join.

The Saturday before the tournament, there was a casual meet-up in downtown Tilburg. We gathered at the food hall and there we met my brother, Edwin, Elon, and Frankie (who turned out to be Swiss). After some food, we went exploring the nightlife, and apparently, in Tilburg, they have a bar with a wheel of fortune. If you spin well, you get free drinks from the bartender, but if you’re less fortunate, you have to buy drinks. Our luck that night wasn’t so good… At one of the other bars, we ran into two other players from Italy, Mario and Lucca. The more the night progressed, the more we realized that what was a Tuesday night for us was a hellish night for some.

On the day of the tournament, we were ready to go. We had no idea what to expect, so we went in with an open mind. We were a bit early and saw our Italian friends at the hotel and walked to the venue together. There we met various people and there was a warm atmosphere, as if we had all known each other for years. However, one person was missing, our new Swiss friend Frankie, who showed up a bit later and apparently had a hellish night, but with a bucket under his arm, he too joined the tournament.

The later it got, the more fun Old School turned out to be, and when we were still in the mid-range at the end of the day, it turned out that we weren’t doing so bad after all.

The spark of Old School ignited, and what was once a spark later turned into a roaring fire. Old School we’re back!
